Choose a holiday apartment in Venice CastelloWhen in Venice, one cannot afford to skip a visit to Castello. The island of San Pietro holds an important church and the Castello Fortress, after which the city gets its name. Arsenale contains the dock yards founded in 1104; Castello grew around them in the 13th century. These dock yards formed Europe's largest naval complex at the time and they remain primarily an industrial part of the city, with two gigantic lions at its main entrance.Going past Arsenale, the < ahref="http://www.labiennale.org/en/art/venues/giardini.html" target="_blank">Gardens of the Biennale were created by Napoleon at the far end of the city. Today, they offer a rare open expanse of greenery in Venice and hosts the world famous Venice Biennale Art Exhibition. There are many churches in Castello, famous for their religious and architectural significance. The Santa Maria Formosa is an odd-shaped, must-visit square to get all of the city's action, with bars and shops packed with tourists and locals alike. Viale Garibaldi is the center of Castello, and thus an ideal place to choose your accommodation in. There are various Venice holiday accommodation options in Catsello, and if you choose to stay in an apartment you'll have the convenience of being able to sue a kitchen. Supermarkets and fresh food markets are within easy reach, so you can easily stay on a low budget and enjoy home-cooked meals. Alternatively, there are many delicious restaurants in the area serving local Venetian dishes. Venice needs to be explored on foot so take a scenic walk along the Canale di San Marco, right up to Piazza San Marco. Castello is one stop (a quarter of an hour's journey) away from the Piazza San Marco by boat, their boundary marked by the Bridge of Sighs. You can also reach the famous Lido beach for a day of fun in the sun after just one boat stop from Castello. |
