This Scheggino rental "Casanera" is a first floor two bedroom apartment situated in an old completely renovated medieval style building in the heart of Scheggino.
The main feature of Casanera is the spacious living/dining room. Its focal point is a massive fireplace made with original stone and a little balcony overlooking the main pedestrian alley and the famous tower of Scheggino.
The décor is simple in order to flow with the stark medieval style of the surroundings. A staircase made out of iron and wood takes you to a wide mezzanine where the first bedroom is.
From the upstairs bedroom there is a magnificent view of the valley. The window in the other bedroom, downstairs, stands right on top of a small stream (Venetian style).
The bathroom has a shower and a washing machine.
Casanera can accommodate up to 6 people. There is a double bed in each room and one on the mezzanine floor.
20 meters from the main door stands the old Porta Valcasana once the main entrance to the village.
On the other side a beautiful stream flows along a masted country path which leads to the public swimming pool (100m) and the hiking paths of the Valcasana.
The Umbria region of Italy has been called "The Green Heart of Italy", due to its central location and equal distance from Rome and Florence. The area is less discovered than its eastern neighbour, Tuscany, but just as magnificent. Umbria is a beautiful, unspoiled, countryside area of rolling, forested hills, vast grassy meadows covered with flowers, large olive grove plantations, and several lakes and valleys. The landscape is dotted with many picturesque medieval villages, and the people of the area are known for their distinctive cuisine, friendliness and hospitality.
Like so much of Italy, food, wine, and entertainment are the core of Umbria's charm. One of its rivers, the Nera, flows into the Tiber: its valley, called the Valnerina, is widely considered by Umbrians the most scenic area of Umbria.
ABOUT SCHEGGINO
Scheggino is a small town with less than 1000 habitants situated in the Nera valley. The church of St. Nicholas, which you'll find right in the middle of the town center, dates back to the 13th century. The town can boast a truly unique countryside because of the particular beauty of the Nera valley.
The splendid Springs of Valcasana, which are to be found in the town’s vicinity, are just one example of the spectacles which nature has to offer here. Scheggino is famous for its truffles and river trouts which can be sampled in one of the many restaurants in Scheggino.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
There are many outdoor activities in the Valnerina. Walking and hiking, of course, in the beautiful, unspoilt scenery. There is a very popular walk along the route of the old railway that used to run from Spoleto to Norcia - a descriptive book in English is available. Also mountain biking on the many paths through the forests - again books in English are available for this. Horse riding is also popular along with the other country pursuits such as fishing and hunting.
In September there is the grape harvest and in November the olive harvest with tastings at the well-known estates. During winter the black truffle is in season and truffle-hunting expeditions can be arranged - not using pigs though, in Umbria they tend to use dogs to sniff out these delicacies!
Water sports are possible too - in Scheggino you can do fishing, canoeing, rafting, and canyoning (floating down the river with lifejackets and wetsuits!). An Olympic size pool is open between June and September.
The winter ski resort of Frontignano over 2000m above sea level is about 45 minutes from Scheggino so skiing is a distinct possibility in winter.
HOW TO GET HERE
Scheggino is easy to get to. It would take about the same time to get there from Roma or Ancona airports - about 1 hour 45 minutes if the traffic is normal. It is only 10 minutes from the beautiful, historic city of Spoleto which has all the amenities you could want... shops, supermarkets, hospital, doctors, services of all kinds and, of course, the world-famous Festival dei Due Mondi (festival of the 2 worlds, classical and modern) every year at the end of June and the beginning of July.
During August there is also the Spoleto Estate series of concerts and performances, many of them free of charge. It is an interesting tourist centre with an increasing number of visitors enjoying its Roman and Etruscan remains as well as its lovely churches, castle and views.
The highlight of Umbria is always a visit to Assisi, 30 minutes away. The Basilica of Saint Francis is justly renowned throughout the world for its beauty and famous frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue.
WHY UMBRIA?
A trip in Umbria is a trip back in time. Medieval mists stretch across Roman landscapes. The Renaissance mingles with the Middle Ages. Vintners work vineyards owned by family members for 500 years. Farmers drizzle bread with freshly pressed olive oil. Women kneel in churches filled with artwork by famous artists. Children kick soccer balls down cobblestone streets. An Umbria vacation is a delight for the senses.
