The Aeolian archipelago is made up of seven islands, whose beauty and characteristics vary from island to island. In order of size, they are: Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea.
The name "Aeolian" derives from Eolo, god of the winds, who, according to Homer, lived here. Since they are merely volcanic islands, the forces of nature, air, water and fire show themselves continuously.
Stromboli is the only active volcano; from its several craters the magma pouring out towards the sea gushes out. Vulcano has been inactive for a very long time; actually the last eruption dates back to 1890 and ever since the volcano has kept a fumarole stage.
Tourists visiting these islands will be fascinated by the natural beauties they offer: a deep blue crystal clear sea, thanks to the seabed rich in "posedonia" sea-weed and a variety of fish; the pebbly and black sandy beaches; enormous rocks emerging from the sea; sea caves to explore and above all the sunsets and the dawns which, with their colours, make everything very striking. In the Aeolian Islands the climate is very mild, typically Mediterranean; the thermometer never goes below 10 degrees C and this allows agreeable stays even off season.
