The island of Sicily is a place of contrasts, from the crumbling grandeur of its capital, Palermo, to the Greek ruins at Syracuse, volatile Mt Etna and the Aeolian Islands. Sicily has attracted waves of invaders and colonisers, remains of those times include Greek temples, Roman ruins, Norman churches and castles, and Arab and Byzantine domes. The summer heat can be utterly scorching so we send you to Sicily in the spring where the beaches are superb and empty. The island is a world apart, separated from the rest of Italy not only by the sea, but also by centuries of history and culture.

PALERMO

Despite the difficulties of getting around Palermo, there's a word of hidden treasures to uncover. In exploring Palermo, expect both sensuous sunshine and somewhat sinister shadows. Palermo hasn't experienced a golden age since the 9th century when, under Arab conquerors, the city became one of the great centres of Islamic culture in the Western world. Palermo spent most of the 20th century in decline, becoming a centre for the notorious Mafia dons. Fortunately, matters are looking up these days, as more and more citizens are realizing what an artistic treasure Palermo is. Not only is this a fantastic city, it's a great 1st stop to visit Sicily.

TAORMINA

t's almost ironic. Taormina is Sicily's most famous resort, yet it has no beach. Travellers will be more than satisfied with astronomical views of Sicily's east coast and Mt. Etna [ so close you can could get a facial ]. The city rising 1000 feet above sea level is located on a plateau below Mount Tauro, for which it is named. With Taormina's ancient Greek splendour, fantastic Italian attractions and unique views of the Ionian coast you'll be able to bore your neighbours with your photos for years.

SAN VITO LO CAPO

On the Northwest coast of Sicily only 80 km from Palermo in the Province of Trapani, lies San Vito lo Capo. With only 4000 inhabitants San Vito lo Capo is one of the sleepiest fishing villages we've been to and also one of the most beautiful and after a long strenuous week in Sicily [yeah right!!] San Vito lo Capo was to be our resting place for the next two days. San Vito lo Capo faces out towards a bay, which extends from S.Vito to the cape of Solanto at Mount Monaco. The water is a clear turquoise colour, the beaches golden and if you want to switch off, eat some of the best seafood and sample some the Sicilian hospitality at it's best then this is certainly the place. Like everywhere in Sicily the influence of different cultures is reflected in the food but in San Vito lo Capo you have to try the fish couscous, it's out of this world.
