Alghero, fortified town, was born from the sea and from the sea deride its name. In fact, it seems that the name of Alghero comes form the plentiful dregs of seaweeds leaves, called, in Italian language, "ALGA", which was on the seaside during south-west wind storm.
Alghero historical resort, with the sea, architectural buildings and the suggestive space of this land, is a "jewel" of touristic Sardinian island. Alghero's place and suggestions, derived from a long and complicated cultural process linked to Sardinian political, social and economical events. Alghero was found in a little peninsula in XII century, by the Doria, an ancient genies family. In the next century, it was subdued by the Catalan-aragonese people. In 1354, other peoples from different catalan lands came to live in Alghero, so that the city keeps these people's traditions and language.
Monuments and churches of the old town, rounded by grand towers and ramparts (see S.Maria cathedral and S.Francesco Church) are buildings in gothic-Catalan style.
"Barceloneta", as Catalan people, lovely, call Alghero, with its sea, its history and its people, has been the first tourist chief town for 1800. Now is very important too, thanks to its great touristic capacity.
Alghero coasts run for 80 Km divided in rock coasts and nice beaches. Through North coast, you can find Sant Joan beach (6 Km long, with natural dunes and very rich vegetation made of pines and junipers) and Calich Pond, rich of botanic species and local fauna. on the other side can be found the modern Fertilia, then wonderful sea scenery, wide red lands and, closed to calich roman bridge, very famous beach resort like Bombarde Beach, Lazzaretto beach and Porto Conte Resort.
