Piazza Navona is exceptionally long and owes its shape to the ruins that formed it, for under the buildings that surround Piazza Navona are the remains of the Circus Domitianus, Domitian's stadium, a part of which can still be seen if you exit on the North end.

The piazza features many fine old buildings, a beautiful church and three stunning fountains. In the centre of the piazza is Bernini's most spectacular fountain, la Fontana dei Fiumi (Four Rivers) erected in 1651.

When in the area make sure to stop by Via del Governo Vecchio, home to countless second-hand clothing stores and one of Rome's most popular budget dining spot: Pizzeria da Baffetto (Via del Governo Vecchio 11).

Also don't miss Via della Pace with its Chiostro del Bramante, a cloister built in 1504 by Bramante, and now a monumental gallery always showing interesting exhibits.
