Looking for the ‘real’ Rio? Avoid the souless high rise hotels of Copacabana and Ipanema and come and stay at Casa 579, a stunning boutique guesthouse hotel and pousada, located in the beautiful colonial district of Santa Teresa. Casa 579 is situated on a hillside above the city centre in Santa Teresa, Rio’s sustainable tourism area and feels far away from the high rise hustle and bustle in the city below; yet with a bus stop and a tram stop 30 seconds from the house, the city centre, beaches, sights and nightlife are just minutes away. The house has been the site of fashion shoots thanks to the stunning views – see the Cristo, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay from the panoramic roof terrace with 180 degree views Rio .
The Rio de Janeiro house also has a spacious and comfortable communal space / living area, and a great choice of accommodation from en suite single/double/triple rooms through to one larger room sleeping up to ten. The rooms upstairs all have views to either the Cristo, Sugar Loaf mountain or both and are spacious with high ceilings. Our Mangueira and Porta da Pedra rooms share a terrace with hammocks from which you can enjoy the view to the Sugar Loaf mountain. Our Sambadromo room is a large room that spans the entire part of the lower part of the house that sleeps up to ten people in single beds, with plenty of storage space, two en suite bathrooms and two walk-in closets. This room provides a great accommodation option for those on a budget but wanting the style and comfort of a guest-house. Finally, our roof-top terrace provides the perfect place to grab some sun or enjoy the 180 degree views whilst enjoying one of Brazil´s famous caipirinhas.
Santa Teresa is a unique part of Rio. With its cobbled streets, colonial mansions and the old fashioned ‘Bonde’ tram, it appears to have stopped in time. Santa Teresa has a fantastic mix of architecture and lots of lush vegetation. With museums, great restaurants and local bars full of character, atmosphere and plenty of live music, it is also just minutes from the city centre and Lapa, the famous Rio de Janeiro nightlife hotspot. Santa Teresa is the home of artists, writers and creative types since as long ago as the 19th century, it was also home to many Rio luminaries, including the men behind the first railway in Brazil and the Christ the Redeemer statue itself.
It is also less segregated than other parts of Rio, with rich and poor living in closer proximity and more harmoniously than other areas of Rio.Nowadays, Santa Teresa is Brazil’s first environmentally protected urban area. It is also a designated sustainable tourism area, with tourism activities focused upon preserving the beautiful natural and historical environment and promoting socio-economic equality. The Yellow ‘Bonde’ (Tram) that runs between Santa Teresa and the city centre, originally horse drawn in the 19th Century, is now the only remaining tram network in South America, and still an integral mode of transport for the local community.
