This 135 sqm Paris holiday apartment is located in the 9th arrondissement, on the 1st French floor of a 19th century building.
The first room upon entering the holiday apartment is the kitchen/dining area. As the rest of the apartment, the decoration is modern and minimalist with an aesthetic mixture of rustic and modern furniture. The kitchen is open to the dining area, and has stainless steel cupboards, matching the stainless steel doors hiding the refrigerator/freezer. A large clear wood table seats 8, with design chairs and rustic antique wood chairs.
Discreet doorways on either end of the kitchen/dining lead to the living area. This room draws the eye up, up, up, to the vaulted 7-meter-high ceiling. Lofty, spacious and light are the best descriptions for this room, with six-meter-high, two-meter wide, elegant arched windows. These windows have a view on a lush green garden, and the courtyard. The room itself is almost 60sqm and one wall is an entire clear-wood book case filled with interesting, eclectic books for every taste. The room is minimalist, with white walls, comfortable dark-green sofas, an art nouveau desk and matching chairs, as well as comfortable armchairs. The room is also donned with simple antique American ‘arts and crafts’ period tables and armchairs and a buffet holding yet more dishes for entertaining.
In front of the seven-meter high, fourteen-meter wide book case, a simple wood and iron staircase ascends and adds an extra line of elegance to the room, leading to the mezzanine, which is actually a 35m2 second floor. The same simple iron railing as on the staircase crowns the mezzanine and allows a lofty view into the main living area. The mezzanine is furnished amongst others with a two simple sofas which transform into beds that sleep two a piece.
A discreet door from the main salon, and under the mezzanine, leads to a comfortable, cozy 13m2 bedroom with a comfortable double bed.
The chic design, large 10m2 purist bathroom is floored and tiled in dark grey slate and simple modern, white porcelain fixtures. Unique is the shower, which is completely open to the room, and therefore almost unnoticeable with a simple wide turn-of-the-century style shower head.

This Paris holiday apartment is situated on the rue des Martyrs, the hustle and bustle of this street is known by Parisians, but little by tourists. The origins of the rue des Martyrs lie in Paris’ most distant past, when it was a Roman outpost called Lutécia; Romans used this path to take Christians to the top of the Montmartre hill and crucify them, hence the name Martyr. Luckily only the name persists, as now the street is active and known for its specialty commerce, from caviar to bakeries and abounding in restaurants and cafés.
From the moment the heavy door closes on the busy rue des Martyrs, a sanctuary reveals itself in the form of a quiet, calm cobblestone courtyard ending in a luscious garden. At the back of this sanctuary and overlooking the garden is the holiday apartment, which used to be the residence and artist atelier of the famous 19th century painter Géricault.
