Development of residential properties on the island did not start until 1912, followed in 1913 by the construction of the Collins Bridge that linked the area to mainland Miami. Incorporated as a town in 1920, the area quickly became a hangout for the rich and famous. A run down appearance took over the area in the 1970s and 80s, providing the perfect backdrop for the 1983 movie, Scarface. In recent years, regional developments and commercial success has seen South Beach return to its former glory becoming, once again, a favorite destination for visitors from across the world.
