Mexico is a real mix of cultures. American, Spanish and Indian influences all come together to make a fascinating country. There is also a mix of the developed and developing world - a stimulating cocktail of wealth, poverty, Microsoft and Mañana. Mexico is definitely a colourful place.
MEXICO CITY
With a population of 22 million, Mexico City is the third largest city in the world. This sprawling metropolis offers a distilled version of Mexico (in fact residents simply call the city "México") in a smaller area. However, with its efficient public transportation and 350 individual colonias (neighborhoods), many people say that it doesn't feel like a large city at all. The historic areas to visit are the Centro Histrico and Coyoacn. Despite being encompassed by Mexico City, Coyoacn maintains its colonial flavor with its narrow streets, plazas and general atmosphere. Centro Histrico also contains a fine assortment of colonial architecture and historic sites.
CANCUN
Cancun, a sun-drenched Caribbean paradise that welcomes close to three million visitors every year, is the most popular destination for people traveling to Mexico. Boasting an amazing spread of spectacular beaches, high-class hotels, excellent shopping, gourmet restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife, in addition to a wide variety of activities including snorkeling, scuba diving, and exploring Mayan ruins, Cancun is hard to beat.
ACAPULCO
Acapulco is the largest and most spectacular tourist resort in the Mexican Pacific. As a result of its stunning beaches, exuberant natural surroundings and wonderful climate, this port has been dubbed the Pearl of the Pacific. Acapulco is an international tourist place, and it is one of the safest cities in Mexico. Set in gorgeous natural surroundings, Acapulco offers an enormous range of attractions and activities. Calm, sunny beaches and exuberant vegetation that surrounds one of the loveliest bays in the Pacific blend seamlessly with major hotel complexes, superb restaurants and wonderful nightclubs.
PUERTO VALLARTA
The small, quaint fishing community of Puerto Vallarta, with its cobblestoned streets that seemed to climb straight up to the jungle behind it, was recognized as a city of Mexico in 1918 but was largely unknown to the rest of the world. But in 1963, during the filming of John Huston's "Night of the Iguana", the sleepy town was invaded by reporters hoping to catch a glimpse of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who were carrying on their illicit love affair -- and a tourist industry was born.
Located on one of the largest natural bays in the world, Bay of Banderas, the region offers 25 miles of enjoyable beaches with the rugged, jungle-clad Sierra Madre mountains as a backdrop, and city life by day and night. The second-most-visited resort in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta now attracts almost three million visitors a year and has a permanent population of over 250,000.
