The History of Hollywood The area that was to become known as Hollywood was once covered in thriving crops. It wasn't until 1886 when land purchased by honeymooners, Hobart and Gigi Johnstone Whitley, was called Hollywood. The name is thought to have been inspired by the clusters of red Californian Holly berries that cover the hillsides each winter. In 1909, the first motion picture studio was built in the region. This, of course, was followed by many others. The iconic Hollywood sign was first erected in 1923 to promote a new housing development. Renovated in 1949, the imposing letters are now an official trademark of the local chamber of commerce.
