About The Lake district

The Lake District is a popular holiday destination in the North West of England. In 1951 the Lake District became a National Park. The Lake District National Park is one of the 14 parks in the United Kingdom and it is the most visited part of the area.

The Lake District belongs to Cumbria, which one of the few mountain regions in England. Here you will find the highest mountain peaks of England with the top of the Scafell Pike being the one with the most altitude (978 meters). The total area has a surface of almost 3000 square kilometers.

The U shaped valleys of the area are a result of the glaciations during the ice-age, thousands of years ago. Many of these valleys turned into lakes over time and have given the park its current name. The Lake District has a total of 16 lakes, most having a long-stretched form as a result of the course of the glaciers.

The climate is very humid in this area; it can rain and snow a lot. The ocean wind that is heated and moistened by the Gulfstream blows up against the hills and mountains and loses its moist when it cools off. As a result there is a rainfall of 3000 mm per year in some regions of the area. This is why the landscape is always very green.

The months from October to January are the wettest months and March to June can be considered as the driest period. Temperatures in January are around the 3 degrees Celsius and in June temperatures are around 15 degrees Celsius.
