Eating out in Winkelmatten, Switzerland

Travel Tips for Switzerland
Eating out in Winkelmatten, Switzerland

There’s usually just one main reason people who visit Zermatt and the sublime Matterhorn chose to stay in Winkelmatten: it’s cheaper. Yet there’s is so much more to this gorgeous hilltop village, then its superlative convenience, that it deserves an extra plug. Yes, everything about Winkelmatten is cheaper than Zermatt, from the little supermarket to the holiday rental chalets and the restaurants, yet it is also a 10 minute walk-away from Zermatt’s attractions, which is a fine time when going downhill, but hard work when coming back uphill. So...is it really just the prices which bring people back here? We don’t think so! Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe so we figure if people head to Zermatt they won’t mind spending a little extra to stay in the town centre if that’s what they want...but not all do. As picturesque and delightful as Zermatt is, it can get overcrowded in high season; it boasts a very healthy nightlife (which just spells late, loud nights for the hotels on the main street) and it can be hard to find a nice relaxing spot for a dinner out, away from the myriad of other tourists. Those who choose to ...

Stay in Winkelmatten when Visiting Zermatt

Stay in Winkelmatten when Visiting Zermatt

The outrageously picturesque village of Zermatt is one of Europe’s most popular skiing destinations, and there’s no guessing what everyone comes here to see...the Matterhorn of course! Not only is Zermatt the closest hub to the Matterhorn, but the village is nestled deep within a valley and surrounded by some of the most divinely striking peaks in Switzerland and Italy. Renowned for having the longest skiing season in Europe, which is actually year-round, Zermatt is the ideal holiday destination for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors in prime surroundings. Zermatt is small, compact and is home to three times more visitors than residents anytime of the year; the superlative hiking also attracting tourists who might shy away from snow-covered peaks in winter. Yet given that the whole town is car-free (electric being the only exception) a visit to Zermatt is unlike anything you’re ever likely to experience. Walking through a perfectly modern village, yet hearing only birds, laughter and the chatter of people is insanely relaxing. Couple that with a river traversing through town and you’ve just discovered the picture-perfect Alpine town. All this, of course, comes at a price, and we don’t just mean financially speaking! Aside the exorbitant prices, comes an ...

Matterhorn Magic in Zermatt Switzerland

Matterhorn Magic in Zermatt Switzerland

[pinit]As far as picture-perfect mountain villages go, Zermatt in Switzerland is about as good as it gets. Even Heidi would be singing the praises of this sublime town! Nestled in a deeply carved gorge, and surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Alps, Zermatt is one of the world’s most revered mountain hiking destinations In Europe. Whilst the consummate skiing and rock-climbing opportunities this whole area offers are unsurpassed (not to mention exceptional dining and drinking), there is really only one sacrosanct event which single-handedly catapulted this once sleepy village, into one of the most venerated mountaineering destinations in Europe: the conquering of the Matterhorn. Book your holiday apartment in Zermatt Centre and be overawed by what is often referred to as the most challenging, and beautiful, mountain on earth. The famed Matterhorn has been luring audacious alpinists to Zermatt since the mid 1800s. Standing tall and proud on the Swiss-Italian border, and reaching a height of 4,478 metres, the Matterhorn had always been seen as an utterly unclimbable. Many expeditions had been made on all the nearby mounts (Zermatt centre is actually surrounded by 29 vertiginous summits), yet the Matterhorn had always remained a seemingly unobtainable dream. Many men ...
