Culinary Delights in Castello, Venice
Castello is Venice’s largest district and is home to some of the most precious architectural and historical attractions in the whole city. Located north-east of St. Mark’s Square, Castello is a fantastic area to stay in if you want to discover and experience a truly authentic Venetian holiday….of a culinary kind. Book your holiday rental in Castello and you’ll have the very best of Venice right at your fingertips. Follow our guide to the area’s best epicurean treats and you too can enjoy the bella vita during your Venice vacation.
Corte Sconta, 3886 Calle Del Pestrin
Corte Sconta is renowned as one of Venice’s best seafood restaurants, but it may be a little hard to find. The restaurant’s entry is unassuming and hides its treasures from the outside world in beautiful fashion. Once inside, take a seat in the gorgeous outdoor terrace and step into a heavenly garden enclave. As with most ‘local’ restaurants, Corte Sconta never bothers to print a menu as it uses only the freshest ingredients available at the daily produce markets.
What that means for you, is that you need only order the ‘seafood antipasti’ platter and then sit back and drool in anticipation! What you will get is a degustation meal of the best catches of the day, cooked to perfection and served in style. There will always be a pasta dish (either with lobster, crab, scampi or mussels) and we highly recommend you order a plate to share with your companion.
What we love about Corte Sconta is the unique flavour combination they dare to create (think clams in a gorgonzola sauce) and the outstanding value for money dining, something which may be a challenge in the heart of Venice.
Complement your meal with half a litre of house wine and you’ll be well on your way to having the best meal of your holiday.
IL Ridotto, Campo SS. Filippo
For another top-class dining experience, head to Il Ridotto and let Gianni and his team surprise you with more culinary delights than you’ll ever be able to savour in just one visit.
You’ll find IL Ridotto just two blocks east of the Ponte dei Sospiri and you may just want to memorise how to get here from your holiday rental apartment. Most visitors are by ‘pure chance’ yet they find themselves coming back here time and again during their stay. And who can blame them? Only fresh and locally grown/made/caught ingredients are used here, and while the creativity of the menu may not be avant-garde by modern standards, IL Ridotto offers incredibly delicious authentic Italian fare at fantastic prices. The baccala’ (salted cod fish) is a definite must-try if it’s on offer, as is the merluzzo, a delightful white-flesh fish of the Adriatic.
Gianni will welcome you as if into his home, and will help you with both your food and wine selections, so feel free to trust the man! We assure you this is not in a tourist-oriented joint, but a world class Italian restaurant. What can we say? We have a knack for finding fantastic value-for-money epicurean gems wherever we go! Buon appetito!
Ristorante Terrazza Danieli, Hotel Danieli , Riva degli Schiavoni 4196
So now here we have it…the one that just couldn’t be missed.
While it’s true that celebrating one’s own achievements (in this case that would be us finding you amazing local eateries in Castello) we must admit that this latest find is not exactly new. Nor is it cheap. But OH MY GOD will it blow your mind!
The Hotel Danieli is Venice’s 5* gem and an establishment with about as much history and prominence as St Mark’s Cathedral. It is on the rooftop of this would famous hotel, that Venice’s epitome dining experience awaits you. The Terrazza Danieli offers haute-cuisine with tres-haute-views of the Grand Canal; a sunset dinner here is about as romantic and magical as Venice can possibly be.
The setting is formal, the service faultless and the food simply divine. From mouth-watering seared scallops infused with truffle oil, to oriental-style crumbed swordfish, this place takes fine dining to a whole new stratosphere! You could also (slightly) lessen the expense by choosing from the cheese and dessert menu only, but if you are in for a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience, then a three course meal at the Terrazza Danieli in Venice fits that ‘bucket list’ remarkably well. So do what you must to score a table here: promise to wash the dishes for six months, sell your worldly belongings…blimey, sell you kidney if you must! Just don’t miss dining here!
