Best Amsterdam’s Markets in Jordaan

Topic:

Jordaan, one of Amsterdam most exclusive central suburbs, has come a long way from its working class and rather humble beginnings. It is this very humble beginning however, which has ensured Jordaan has retained its genuine artistic, alternative and ever so eclectic side. The influx of immigrants and struggling artists has turned Jordaan into on of Amsterdam’s most enticing corners, and has become the hub for some of the city’s best open-air markets.

From the weird, wonderful, delicious and fragrant, there’s not a thing you won’t find when you scour Jordaan’s superlative markets; so book an apartment in Amsterdam and shop your heart out!

Flower Power Market at Bloemenmarkt

This most famous of Amsterdam bazaars is the world’s only floating flower market, and by far one of the most fragrant corners of the city. Rare and gorgeous flowers are sold from one-time houseboats which are now well and truly permanent fixtures in Amsterdam’s western canals. Famous Dutch tulips in every shape and colour (including the elusive black tulips) can be found here, and you’ll have the chance to buy bulbs to take home, as many sellers cater for the tourist market and make the bulbs export-friendly.

The Bloemenmarkt may be very popular with visitors, but it is still the staple flower supply centre of Amsterdam; this is also where locals come to get the freshest Christmas trees in December. The market is open every day, 365 days a year. Local traders have taken advantage of the market’s popularity, and the spot has now seen a rise in souvenir and knickknack stalls too.

Monday Flea Market Feast at Noordermarkt

Do you drool at the mere thought of an oversized garage sale? Does the idea of getting lost in one of the world’s most amazing flea markets send your pulse racing? Then hold off no more and come discover the amazing Noordermarkt Maandagmarkt, or Monday market. Situated on the foregrounds of the Noorderkerk Church, the grounds used to be the church’s graveyard, but have been used as a trading market since the mid 1600s. Collectors from all over the city converge here early in the morning to get their hands on the very best of the week’s picks. From vintage clothing, antique jewellery, toys, clothes and fabrics, this is one place that can send you into bargain overdrive!

Saturday Grower’s Market on Noordermarkt

Every gourmet’s most exquisite craving can be satisfied at the Saturday grower’s market, Boerenmarkt. Held on the same grounds as the Noordermarkt, this collection of yummy delights is just perfect for anyone who is contemplating booking self-catering accommodation whilst in Jordaan. Actually, forget that! Even if your Jordaan holiday rental does not include a kitchen you should still head over here and feast on some of Amsterdam’s most divine epicurean treats.

At this market you’ll find excellent meats, breads, veggies, cheeses, breads and seasonal fruits in abundance. We’d highly recommend you include at least one Saturday in your Amsterdam vacation, just to take advantage of this most exquisite indulgence.
