All roads lead to Rome and all trains too. Therefore, travelling from Rome for a day trip is usually very easy. For example, fifty minutes by express train from Rome’s Ostiense Station and you are in the fortified town of Tarquinia; 1 hour and a half by train and you will be able to admire the treasures of Florence.
ROME TO TARQUINIA
Tarquinia sits atop rocky cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean and is a fascinating medieval town, with a swimming beach. Worth visiting here is the Monterozzi: 6,000 graves carved into the rock that are complemented by beautiful frescoes. Also within the town is the Tarquinia National Museum which exhibits a couple of winged horses that were originally part of the town’s temple.
ROME TO FLORENCE
One of Italy’s main art cities, the beautiful Florence, is only 1 and 1/2 hours by train. There are many trains leaving everyday from Termini station straight to Santa Maria Novella station in the center of Florence. Make sure you visit the Uffizi and Accademia Galleries. If you wish to stay longer in Florence Holiday Velvet has many holiday apartments in Florence.
ROME TO BRACCIANO
About an hour by train from Rome’s Termini Station is the village of Bracciano, which is on the shore of Lake Bracciano. It is an idyllic area rich in forests and olive groves. People love to sail or sailboard on the lake which has a delightful promenade that is graced with restaurants. The lake is a popular area with campers because of its forests, olive groves and gardens.
One of the places to visit while in Bracciano is the 15th century Orsini-Odescalchi Castle which is famed for its numerous towers and secret garden. The castle is surprisingly well-preserved and contains much of its original furniture.
Also in Bracciano are two Baroque churches that are worth a visit and in the neighbouring village of Anguillara there is a partially excavated Roman villa.
ROME TO VITERBO
Also accessible from Termini Station via the Eurostar train is Viterbo, which is about an about and a half away from Rome. It is a walled, medieval town that has some remarkable fountains. In the 11th century the Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista was built and apart from a 16th century rose window and entry portal it is almost unchanged. Walking into the church really is a step back into history and inside the church are wonderful frescoes.
