About Edinburgh Around the Center

The Airlie is situated on the South side of the City of Edinburgh, just over a mile from Princes Street, on the main A701, only 3 miles from the Straiton Junction exit of the Edinburgh City by-pass. We are on an excellent bus route with buses passing the Guest House every few minutes. The bus stop is located about 20 yards from the Guest House. A number 3, 29, 31, 37 or 37a bus will take you to Princes Street. The bus fare is currently £1.10 and the exact change is required as no change is given by the bus driver. Day tickets are available from the bus driver and cost £2.50, this option may prove more cost effective for you if you intend to use several buses in one day.

Newtington is an area which offers a large choice of evening meals, almost all tastes are catered for locally, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian, fish and chips, hotel restaurants, pubs a coffee house and a tea room.

Princes Street is regarded as the centre of the City, it offers beautiful gardens and the magnificent Scott Monument on one side, and a variety of shops on the other. For shopaholics there are more shops in the St. James shopping centre and the Princes Mall shopping centre both situated at the East end of Princes Street. Before you reach Princes Street you have the High Street or Royal Mile as it is also known. Any of the buses passing the Guest House will take you as far as the High Street. This street is where the most well known of the historical visitor attractions are located. At one end of the High Street you have Edinburgh Castle and at the other end you have The Palace of Holyrood House. Some of the other attractions on the High Street include, The Scottish Whisky Heritage Centre, St. Giles Cathedral, John Knox’s House, The Museum of Childhood and the People’s Story. It is well worth taking a walk down the High Street just to savour the atmosphere.

For those of our guests who like to keep fit whether here on holiday or business, we have the Royal commonwealth Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre only a 5 minute walk from the Guest House. This has an Olympic size swimming pool, a diving pool, children’s pool and a full range of fitness equipment. There is also a soft play centre for children up to 8 years old called Clambers. If you walk past the Commonwealth Pool you will enter Holyrood Park and in front of you is Arthur’s Seat - an extinct volcano. There are paths which allow you to climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat and once at the top you have a spectacular view of the City. There is also a road which you can drive up and enjoy the views that way. There are many more places to visit in and around Edinburgh so we have compiled several large folders full of information for you to look at, at your leisure while you are staying with us. These folders can be found on the table in the entrance hall and in the bookcase outside the kitchen. There is also a detailed information folder in each of the bedrooms.
