Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has a long history and, as a sea town on the Atlantic, it had a prominent role in the European exploration of new worlds in the XV and XVI centuries. The Tower of Belém was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard Lisbon’s harbour and it was designed by the architect Francisco de Arruda, including elements from different styles, such as Moorish towers and Venetian loggias. UNESCO has listed the Belém Tower among the World Heritage Monuments and, if you are in Lisbon, this monument is worth seeing, not only because of its historical importance and its beautiful architecture, but also because of the splendid view that it is possible to enjoy from its roof.
