Puerto Viejo stretches along the Caribbean coast and encompasses the neighbourhoods of Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo, where the road ends. Although each neighbourhood has its own character, this area is distinctly Caribbean due to the historical influx of Jamaican settlers. This is evident in the Caribbean cuisine, reggae music and laid back 'tranquilo' attitude -- you can't fail to relax here!

Puerto Viejo is a lively little town with plenty of nightlife. Cocles is quieter with some great cafes and just minutes from Geckoes is arguably the best restaurant on this coast! Puerto Viejo is the place to party and Cocles is the place to relax.

Far less developed than the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Caribbean coast is verdant and lush with great tracts of rainforest bordering the spectacular beaches.
