As the cultural area that is, here we find several theaters, including the Teatro S. Luiz (who has had various names such as Amelia Theater and is now owned by the Lisbon City Hall), the Teatro da Trindade, and the Teatro de São Carlos, the only opera house in Portugal. In the Largo do Chiado rise from two baroque churches: the Italian Church of Loreto, on the north side, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (Lisbon), in front, with the exterior walls partially decorated with tiles.

Also in Chiado district, lies the Largo do Carmo, with its trees "jacaranda". In this square, resist the ruins of the Convent do Carmo, built in the XIV century, which is currently installed on the Archaeological Museum of Carmo. In front of the convent, is the Fountain of Carmo (eighteenth century).

Right next to the convent, is the headquarters of Carmo, belonging to the National Guard. On the other side of the convent, you will find the former Palace Valadares, building that already had several uses. This palace stands in the place where it was founded the first Portuguese university.

Among the Convent of Carmo and the Valadares Palace, stands the gateway to the Santa Justa Elevator, linking to Carmo lower downtown, including the Gold Street. Even in this large, we find the Church of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmo.
