The Volkspark Friedrichshain park has been around since the late 19th century. Spread over 130 acres / 52 hectares, it is the second-largest open green space in Berlin. There are two man-made hills from where you can see all over the park and admire the landscape of the city; locals have a great attachment to these hills because they are made of the rubble from the park's bombings during World War II. There is a lot to see and do in Volkspark Friedrichshain. It contains Berlin's oldest municipal hospital that was inaugurated in 1874 and recently expanded in 2002, continuing with the original brick structure. The Fairy Tale fountain at one of the park entrances delights children and the young at heart with over a hundred stone sculptures of Grimm's fairytale characters. All around the park, you will find monuments in honor of the martyrs who lost their lives in the Revolution of 1848. You can attend a music concert, dance performance or some other form of entertainment in the eastern portion of the park; it has an open-air stage and 3,000-seating capacity. Volkspark Friedrichshain is the place to get away from the noise and crowds of the city for a few hours. East Side Gallery is a top tourist attraction in Berlin both for art aficionados and history buffs. At 1.3 kilometers in length, it is the longest existing section of the former Berlin Wall; 118 artists from 21 countries have covered its entire surface with around 105 murals depicting the fall of the Wall. Simon-Dach-Strasse is the main boulevard passing through Friedrichshain and is alive anytime of the day or night. There are numerous cafes, bakeries and ice-cream parlors along its length catering to visitors. The Berghain night club near Simon-Dach-Strasse has become Europe's top club and has a long queue to get in every night. When you choose a holiday apartment in the Friedrichshain area, you can quickly explore all these attractions within the area. Since Friedrichshain is at the heart of Berlin, you can then board a bus or train and conveniently venture out to other parts of the city. |
