Vacation Rental Description

Beautiful 16th century watermill in the heart of the Basque country.

This apartment rental in Basque Country was built in 1550 and is set in 5 acres of riverside gardens. The mill is in a small hamlet on the river Arberoue, just outside the Basque village of La Bastide Clairence, voted one of the most beautiful villages in France and just 30 minutes from the popular seaside resort of Biarritz.

The mill has 4 bedrooms, 3 doubles and 1 twin. There is a bathroom and separate WC on the first floor. On the ground floor are a brand new fitted kitchen with all new appliances (April 2008), a large living/dining room with fireplace, large hallway and downstairs shower room and WC. Several doors open from the downstairs out onto the surrounding terrace where the river flows below. The terrace with views over the river is perfect for al fresco dining .There are further dining and relaxing areas on the island garden.

The farmer's field opposite contains horses who regularly come down to the river to drink.

Although located in wonderfully peaceful countryside, the A64 motorway is easily accessible (just a 10 minute drive) and Biarritz and the Spanish border and just a half hour's drive away, as are Bayonne, St. Jean de Luz and many of the beautiful 'picture-postcard' Basque villages. Biarritz airport is just 25 minutes from the mill and Pau airport is 45 minutes drive.

The surrounding countryside has been likened to that of New Zealand and the Pyrenees make a spectacular backdrop. Biarritz and the rest of the Basque coastline is world famous for its excellent surfing conditions and several surfing competions are held there. The restaurants in the Basque country are of a very high standard. There are also numerous excellent golf courses, including the oldest in Continental Europe at Pau.
