Considered to be one of the first examples of modern urban planning, Barcelona's Eixample, whose name means "extension" in the Catalan language, was developed in the later half of the nineteenth century. The brain child of designer Ildefons Cerda, he proposed the then revolutionary idea of a self-contained neighborhood outside the city limits that provided all the inhabitants resources such as schools, stores, and hospitals right where they lived.

Eixample is a pleasant neighborhood showcasing beautiful Modernista architecture, primarily the works of Antoni Gaudi, founder of the Spanish Art Noveau Movement. One of the most remarkable examples of Gaudi's work, the almost indescribably gorgeous Casa Batllo, is considered one of the most magnificent examples of Modernista architecture in existence. Barri Gotic

Barri Gotic, or the Gothic Quarter, is considered to be the cultural hub of Barcelona. This beautiful area was originally a Roman village, and ancient buildings stand directly adjacent to modern day architecture, effortlessly combining old and new.

A must-see attraction is Cathedral Santa Crue, which began its existence in 1298. Facing the Placa de la Seu in the center of the Gothic Quarter, it is surrounded by a number of Roman era remains and medieval structures. The awe-inspiring exterior is dominated by the massive front doors and central spire. The panoramic views of the city as seen from the roof of the structure are utterly amazing.

Filled with charming, winding cobblestone streets flanked by imposing, ancient buildings, this town that once was the home of Picasso also boasts many tranquil squares, in addition to a huge assortment of restaurants, quaint shops and Barcelona rentals.

El Born

Despite its humble roots as a settlement built on top of a medieval jousting area, El Born has become one of the most fashionable and trendy neighborhoods of Barcelona. Bustling cafes and shops line the Passeig de Born, which local legend claims is the site of those long-ago jousting tournaments.

Calle Montcada, another street dating back to the medieval era, is now the site of the Picasso Museum and the Textile Museum, located here because in Born's early days it was home to the textile guilds of Barcelona.
