Choose a holiday apartment in Amsterdam NieuwmarktNiewumarkt is exactly as it sounds in English: New Market Square. Since the 17th century it has been the center for trading and shopping. It's located just inside the old city gate and surrounded by canals. The main center of attraction is de Waag, Weigh house originally built in 1448. It was originally called St. Anthonhy's Gate and was the main entry point into the city before the old city walls were torn down.Waag also so served as a guild hall, a museum, among other things. It now houses Restaurant-Cafe In de Waag on the first floor an the top floor is closed to the public. Nieuwmarkt still continues with its tradition as a market square. During the week you can find one or two stalls on the west side of the square. On the weekends, they have the farmer's market and the antiques market from May to October. You can find fresh organic fruits and vegetables as well as clothing and collectibles. While they still may have daily markets, they draw more attention for their cafes and restaurants. One of the more popular is Cafe Cuba, which is a latin style bar. Its the hot spot on a Friday night. Located behind Nieuwmarkt is Chinatown, where of course, you'll find lots of delicious exotic foods. It is said this is the best place to celebrate the Chinese new year. There's also the red light district, where right in the center is a convent, the Bethany Convent. The convent dates all the way back to 1462. It is said the location was chosen in hopes that the women there might repent for their sins by joining the convent. In 2000, it was transformed into a venue for the chamber of music. There's lots do do and see in Nieumarkt for sure, so if you're planning on visiting, renting a holiday apartment in Nieuwmarkt is defintely the way to go and enjoy all that Nieumarkt has to offer. You'll be able to check in and out at your convenience. Everything is at your door step: the shops, cafes, the night life and the metro. |
