Choose a holiday apartment in Amsterdam JordaanThe district of Jordaan is truly a remarkable place in Amsterdam due to its wonderful culture and history. No wonder it is one of the top choices for tourists when it comes to searching for the perfect short-term rental accommodation. There are several theories as to how Jordaan got its name. Many say that it was derived from the French word 'jardin' which means garden because the streets in Jordaan were named after flowers. Others believe that the name came from the River Jordaan in the Holy Land. The neighborhood of Jordaan was originally built in 1612 to house the working class and immigrants and, as a result, it became a slum area with wide-spread poverty. During the 1970s, the government implemented modernization efforts, causing the transformation of Jordaan from a slum area into a district for the wealthy. Tourists will love staying in Jordaan because it's one of the prettiest areas of the city and has all the basic necessities people need during their stay including shops, markets, restaurants, and coffee shops. Jordaan's labyrinth-like streets make strolling around the neighborhood. It is also home to very nice courtyards with well-kept houses and beautiful gardens. The stone tablets that hang outside the houses in Jordaan is one of its unique features. These tablets indicate the profession or the family emblem of the residents. In order to commemorates the famous personalities that came from Jordaan, the local government ordered the building of statue of these people in a square called Johnny Jordaanplein. Well-known singers from Jordaan such as Johnny Jordaan, Tante Leen, and Johnny Meijer have their statues here and recently, they added the statues of Manke Nelis. Jordaan is also home to a number of different markets. Every Saturdays, tourists can go to the Lindenmarkt or Lime Market which is a general market. A food market is present on Noordermerkt or North Market which also has a flea market on Mondays. Nice fabrics and clothing items can be found on Westerstraat or West Street. Art enthusiasts will love going to museums in Jordaan which include the Pianola Museum that houses old mechanical pianos, Theo Thijssen Museum, houseboat museum, and the Anne Frank House where the girl and her family took refuge during World War II. Apartments in Jordaan vary from one to five stars and they have 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units to suit the different needs of their visitors. |
