The steep narrow roads, fortified walls, and watchtowers that form much of the character of Positano today, date back to the 13th century when the residents of Positano sought to protect themselves from invasion. Unfortunately, after a tsunami in 1343 and continual raids by Ottoman pirates, the town lost its status as a naval power and reverted to a remote sleepy village. During the 1950's when the Italian government built Route 193, a road connecting Naples to the towns and villages of the Amalfi coast, people rediscovered the beauty of the smooth pebbled beaches and breath-taking views of the deep blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Among the first tourists that discovered the pleasures of an Amalfi Coast holiday include Steinbeck, Picasso, Klee, and Elizabeth Taylor. Today visitors enjoy both the natural beauty of Positano's shores at the Spiaggia Grande Beach along with the 13th century Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its extensive art collection.
