Alpe d’Huez is known as “L’ile au Soleil” (island of the sun) as most of the slopes face south and for the amount of sunshine it gets year round. It is also one of the main mountains in the Tour de France that has been a stage finish in almost every year since 1976 except for 2009 and 2010. The town and shops are close by along with other activities such as hiking in the nature reserves or riding on a nostalgic train of Montenvers to discover sea ice.
